‘Gambling can be addictive’

Addiction Economy Thought for Today - Haha, this is straight from Grant Ennis 9 Frames of Disinformation!

GambleAware, an industry funded body, calls for health warnings on gambling adverts, including 'Gambling Can Be Addictive'. This doesn't work to prevent problem gambling. The reason Cig and vape companies don't mind 'THIS PRODUCT IS ADDICTIVE' in big letters on their packs because it doesn't stop people, and may instil a further expectation effect of the futility of trying to stop an addictive product.

It is known that health warnings don't work in reducing use and problem use, but stopping advertising does. The reason gambling harms have gone through the roof is because a Labour Government decided that gambling should be a profitable leisure industry and so allowed advertising.

The next Labour Government should realise that was a disastrous mistake and prevent all advertising and promotion for all gambling, everywhere.

“We know that gambling advertising can contribute to the normalisation of gambling as just a bit of ‘harmless fun’,” said Alexia Clifford, chief communications officer at GambleAware. “We want to see stronger restrictions on gambling advertising to protect people from harm."

Restrictions which don't include restrictions on advertising.
