Calculate the cost to society of cigs in your area
Addiction Economy Thought for Today - How much does smoking cost society?
Nice from Action on Smoking and Health (UK) - A new 'Ready Reckoner' "an easy-to-use cost calculator, allowing anyone to see the costs of smoking to society. The tangible wider societal costs of smoking in England are £46.3 Bn and these are broken down into individual local authorities, combined authorities, regions, and Integrated Care Boards (ICBs). Estimates are also available for parliamentary constituencies and wards."
The question behind our whole Addiction Economy project was Joe's question to me when we were discussing all the harmful companies: “How are cigarette companies still allowed to exist?” Indeed.
Totally astonishing; they have no benefit to society and are the biggest source of mass death the world has ever seen and yet….here they are still.
But what about the tax people ask us, the treasury are addicted to the tax! This is a nice reminder that something that costs £46bn a year and brings in revenue, including VAT, of £7bn, is not worth it by even the most financially illiterate person's calculations!
