Navigating New Frontiers: The Impacts of Neural Data on Freedom of Thought
Addiction Economy Thought for Today - new frontiers of the addiction economy here with concerns about regulation of neural data from Nita Farahany
Her work and that of Dr. Susie A. explore how our freedom of thought could and is being undermined by technology and how in the future, with the use of neural data, it could be even more manipulative than now.
How 'inferences drawn from such data can expose sensitive personal information' is one aspect and then there is the uses to which this is put which are only in the corporate interest and not our own interest. The 'Battle for your Brain' as Nita's book is title and 'Freedom to think' is Susie's. Both highly recommended.
We are pondering how much our freedom of thought and action is already compromised by relatively boring stuff like addictive product design of social media or gambling apps and ubiquitous advertising of food for example, this is another frontier again.
It seems that precautionary regulation is important here and has been missed in other sectors. Back to the Nanny State, Negligent State discussions - when is it beholden on governments to protect its citizens from the impacts of predatory corporate business models. And more importantly, when do we really have the freedom of choice we feel we have to addict ourselves to the various products sold to us which go on to harm us. Not easy.
