The Illusion of Choice in the Addiction Economy"

Addiction Economy Thought for Today - good piece in the FT today from novelist and and artist Simon Wroe calling for actions on advertising and marketing for unhealthy foods.

He has created an immersive theatre experience called Sweet Dreams in Manchester .

"How we feel about food today speaks to a wider sense – and a deepening suspicion – that modern life is artificial, unsustainable, and not necessarily giving us what we need. There are no easy answers. Whatever choice some of us might have is complicated, and many have no choice at all. When it comes to food, large-scale co-operatives and multinationals shape not only our realities but our desires. "

"We’ve been consuming other people’s dreams so long it’s hard to know what our own wishes are." What a great sentence. This is the crux of our Addiction Economy work, that we think we have free will, but we don't. Our environment shapes our every choice and business shapes our environment.

Loving the sound of this. Looks like Joe Woof and I are going to have to go on a works outing to Manchester - we'll post a review!

However we think we can be more imaginative than just his call for a ban on advertising in our '10 lessons for UPF Campaigners from the Addiction Economy" here:
