The Urgent Need for Regulation of Health-Harming Food Industries

Addiction Economy Thought for Today - Oh boy, this is how to draw attention to the effects of obesity and the need for regulation of health harming companies.

Brilliant and shocking article from Channel 4's Andy Davies here in the Guardian and below on Channel 4 News. Harrowing viewing and reading, those poor people.

He tells the stories of people, particularly in poorer communities, having their legs amputated, going blind and having their eyes operated on all because of type 2 Diabetes. The NHS is overwhelmed, opening new clinics for health issues that never used to be an issue and people's lives are ruined.

You only have to go below the line in any national newspaper article to see vicious quotes blaming the people for their health issues. This is not the problem.

Generations of people have not all of a sudden become lazy. The real problem is the 'food deserts' that they live in, the 'food' that is advertised everywhere they look is unhealthy, nutritionless shit pretending to be food. It has the added commercial bonus of being addictive through the deliberate product design which makes our bodies not feel satiated, as normal food does, and so our brain wants us to eat more. Which we do.

As per my letter in the FT in July, drastic clamp downs on these foods and food companies, together with incentives and helping people to avoid them and eat real food is what is needed.
