No Safe Level of Alcohol: New Research Debunks Previous Claims

Addiction Economy Thought for Today - is about just how important quality academic research is. And some disappointing news for those of us who are partial to a bit of booze. (FYI, I have cut down to maybe a bottle a month from half a bottle a night since doing this work 😱 )

So the bad news is there is pretty much no safe level of alcohol and studies in the past which said a small amount was actually beneficial have been wrong.

This is because they didn't take into consideration that abstainers and quitters might be doing so for reasons of their own bad health. So that made the stats for moderate to light drinkers look better by comparison!

“It’s been a propaganda coup for the alcohol industry to propose that moderate use of their product lengthens people’s lives,” said Dr Tim Stockwell, first author on the study and a scientist at the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria.

“The idea has impacted national drinking guidelines, estimates of alcohol’s burden of disease worldwide and has been an impediment to effective policymaking on alcohol and public health,” he added.

"Last year, a major study of more than half a million Chinese men linked alcohol to more than 60 diseases, including liver cirrhosis, stroke, several gastrointestinal cancers, gout, cataracts and gastric ulcers".

Sorry!
