Bans sometimes work!

Addiction Economy Thought for Today - bans work sometimes.

Everyone always very keen to tell us that bans don't work and citing 1920's American and Prohibition of alcohol. But sometimes they do, like here with the Whaling Ban from the wonderful folks at Information is Beautiful.

Sometimes partial bans work, sometimes different types of prohibition works Sometimes bans don't work if you don't enforce them properly and quash the illegal backlash and then if you do, then they do work.

Bans for for some things not others. Maybe alcohol being so embedded in society will not work, but cigarette restrictions have worked and something like vapes which are new might be different again.

Next part of our job on the Addiction Economy is finding out when bans work and when they don't and what does work. Lots to do! I can envisage a great series of infographics from Joe Woof on this!
